ICCB 2023 – Kigali, Rwanda

Social Event at The Hut (July 25)

Enthusiasm for all things counterfactual was at an all-time high at ICCB 2023. This was especially evident at the events organized by the Impact Evaluation Working Group (IEWG; see textbox), starting with our social event at the rooftop restaurant, The Hut. Over 30 biologists, social scientists, practitioners, academics (and a few funders!) came together that evening to debate and discuss the importance of integrating impact evaluation methods into conservation practice.

Symposium (July 27)

Two days later we addressed this question during our symposium on Thursday 27th July, which was titled “Bridging the Impact Evaluation Research-Practice Gap in Conservation”. We had a line-up of amazing speakers – Lize von Staden, Edwin Pynegar, Rebecca Young and Molly Grace, Ranaivo Rasolofoson, Rachel Neugarten and Paul Ferraro – talk about their experiences and lessons learned from integrating impact evaluation into conservation practice. The event was incredibly well-attended – there were people standing and sitting on the floor – so a great success.

Round-table Discussion (July 27)

Whilst at ICCB, the IEWG managed to organise a last-minute roundtable with the (always) great support of the ICCB organisation team. The round-table took place immediately after the symposium, and even though people were hungry (there was no time for lunch) we had over 20 highly engaged participants discussing next steps for our working group, including a Special Issue on the topic of the symposium.

Thank you all for being involved!

Best,
Tanya on behalf of the IEWG Board
