Call for contributions – ECCB2026 Symposium

Our board is submitting a proposal for a symposium titled (provisionally):
Evidence and Attribution in the age of Novel Data, Analytical Methods, and Technologies.

We are seeking presentations of research on:
i) Issues, challenges and ways forward to improve attribution (i.e. establishing cause effect relationships) in conservation science;
ii) Opportunities and challenges presented by recent advances in data, methods, and technologies for impact evaluation in conservation.

Applied and perspective-type contributions are welcome. The aim is to stimulate critical discussions on how to improve conservation impact evaluation, and the ways in which novel data, technologies and methods can support these efforts.

Talks will be 10 minutes long, followed by a 3-minute discussion. We will select 5 presentations for a 1.5 hour standard symposium. For more details see: https://eccb26leiden.eu/calls/

If you’re interested in presenting your work in the symposium, please send a title, abstract, and list of authors to tanyaogarra@gmail.com before 17th October. The IEWG Board will review the submissions and select talks that best fit the symposium’s topic.

Looking for board members!

We are pleased to announce a call for nominations for three positions on our Board: Community and Engagement Lead, Conference & Events Lead, and Secretary & Volunteer Engagement Lead (see details below). Successful candidates will serve a 3-year term starting Nov 2025.

We welcome self-nominations as well as nominations of other people; however, please only nominate individuals other than yourself with their permission. The nominations committee will consider geographic, disciplinary, and professional diversity to develop a final ballot of up to eight candidates. New IEWG Board members will be elected through a ballot of our members, which will run Oct 20 – Nov 2, 2025. All board members must be in good standing with the Society for Conservation Biology (check your membership status on the SCB website). If you nominate someone other than yourself, please do so early enough that their acceptance can be requested before the deadline.

Details of Roles
Time commitments vary (approximately 4-12 hours per month). We ask potential candidates to think carefully about their ability to commit sufficient time to the IEWG Board prior to nomination.

1. The Community and Engagement Lead will strengthen connections with members, partners, and the broader conservation community to expand participation in IEWG activities. Responsibilities include coordinating outreach efforts, supporting member engagement initiatives, and helping to grow the visibility and reach of the Working Group.

2. The Conference and Events Lead will coordinate IEWG’s presence at conferences and organise symposia, workshops, and other events that highlight impact evaluation in conservation. Responsibilities include liaising with event participants and partners, managing event logistics, and ensuring IEWG activities at conferences run smoothly and effectively.

3. The Secretary & Volunteer Engagement Lead will support the smooth functioning of the Board by managing communications, maintaining records, and coordinating volunteer involvement. Responsibilities include organising monthly board meetings, preparing meeting agendas and notes, and guiding volunteers to contribute effectively to IEWG activities.

All Board members are also expected to:
a. Attend and contribute to monthly virtual meetings,
b. Contribute time and effort towards at least two other activities/resources

We also encourage board members to attend in-person SCB-related congresses as circumstances allow and to serve as IEWG representatives on SCB committees, conferences, and/or other collaborative efforts.

Nominees should send their CV and statement of interest that details past involvement with SCB and the IEWG and their vision for IEWG (250-word limit) to teamcounterfactual@gmail.com (IEWG Membership) by Oct 12th, 2025. Please indicate the time commitment you are willing to make to the specified roles and to other board-related tasks. Elections will begin shortly after the deadline.

7th October 2025

We’re thrilled to announce the official launch of our new website! As impact evaluation continues to gain momentum within conservation science, we’ve created this platform to make IEWG’s resources more accessible to the impact evaluation community, while also fostering greater engagement and a stronger sense of community. Alongside the website, we’re excited to introduce our new volunteering scheme as an opportunity for students, practitioners, and researchers to actively contribute and get more involved with the working group.
